The Slough--What's left of it. June 27
They've turned the Slough into a ditch with backhoes and dump trucks. What was a meandering spring creek with weeds, eddys, mud, and hatches is now a sterile, mostly fishless ditch. I found a remnant little pool with a few rising fish just below the ruined zone, fish that just happened to be eating the last couple of pmd's that floated by every now and then. The final curtain, so to speak. Maybe this public spring creek will return to glory some day, but for now, stick a fork in most of it.
The new ditch. Bobber water. |

Madison Pit-Stops June-July (813cfs-931cfs)
Good side-channel and bank fishing in the evenings with caddis and pmd spinners. Mornings and daytime not so good on any visits.

Green Drakes June 23-26 (1260-1370 cfs.)
Its not too hot here yet, the weather that is. Drakes are popping every morning. The fish are on them. They only hatch once a year, unlike more common baetis and pmds. The hatch is short with the bright sunny mornings. I just can't leave though. I tried a little, driving north today, but turned right back around for another morning. Why leave the center of the western fly fishing universe?
These are fun, and visible, and pretty |
Gulls and Drakes go together, unfortunately |
Glass is sweet, like my 1970's Fenwick with the old Martin. |
The ole log jam flat usually has risers |
Fishing's good here, right by the truck and trailer |
Evening bite wasn't working, but still nice out. |
Yep |
